In June of 2012, our executive director, Kristie Fry, travelled to a mountain village in Southern Haiti to visit a vibrant school and community development project. While there, she met many children and their families, but five in particular most firmly pulled her heartstrings. These precious ones expressed deep longing to go to school. They live within a stone's throw of a small school, but Haiti does not have a state-run educational system and their families just cannot pay for uniforms and tuition. At tender ages, these children realized there is little hope for their futures without an education. Kristie promised those five that ACR would work to help them.
With great pleasure we share that young Elli, Mika, Ruth, and teens Wildor and Wildorf became the first five in our new education program in Fond des Blancs, Haiti. Those five received the privilege of donning crisp new uniforms to enter school as students for the first time - improving their future possibilities to gain employment and break the cycle of intense poverty. In pictures sent from their first day (available on our website), you can see joy in the youngest students as they pose in their uniforms, and you can feel the pride coming through the faces of the teens who now have hope of becoming literate - a gift they could not have realized without A Child's Refuge and our many donors.
We dare to dream that all children of Fond des Blancs will someday be able go to school. Together, we can make life better for those less fortunate, and help them to help themselves.
